Who Needs Liposuction?

If areas of your body continue to hold onto fat, despite your efforts to achieve a healthy weight, don’t despair. Liposuction offers a solution to help you slim down in even the most stubborn areas.
At Plastic Surgery Arts Center in Webster, Texas, our plastic surgeon, Dr. Jan Garcia, provides liposuction to help you get a physique that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
Liposuction isn’t weight-loss surgery, so it’s not for those who still need to lose some pounds to achieve a normal weight. Rather, liposuction helps refine your physique. Dr. Garcia outlines the characteristics of people who are good candidates for the procedure.
You have “problem” areas
Liposuction helps reduce fat in areas resistant to traditional weight-loss methods like diet and exercise. Many areas of the body can be treated with liposuction, and more than one area can be treated in a single appointment.
The procedure can slim areas such as the:
- Hips
- Buttocks
- Abdomen
- Thighs
- Calves
- Ankles
- Breasts
- Back
- Upper arms
- Neck
If you have complaints about areas of your body, set up a consultation at Plastic Surgery Arts Center to find out how liposuction (or another procedure) may be right for you.
You’re at a near-ideal weight
If you’ve successfully achieved or maintained a weight that’s close to your ideal size, but have disproportionate, localized areas of fat, you need liposuction to achieve a symmetrically slim physique.
Liposuction literally suctions fat cells away from treated areas. The fat cells are gone for good, as long as you continue to follow a healthy diet and active lifestyle.
You have good skin elasticity and muscle tone
Dr. Garcia evaluates you prior to a liposuction procedure. If you have excess skin remaining from a large weight loss, then in addition to liposuction you may need a lipectomy to tighten those areas. A lipectomy removes excess skin and tightens remaining skin to give you the toned, taut physique you’re after.
Liposuction alone performed in areas with lax skin may make your skin look even more saggy.
You want results quickly
Liposuction is a relatively quick procedure that’s easy to recover from. You usually go home the same day as the procedure. Most people can return to work after just 2-3 days, but if you have a strenuous job, you may need a few weeks off. While you should avoid exercise for 2-3 weeks, you can go back to most daily chores within a few days.
Even if diet and exercise could achieve the same results as liposuction, it would likely take years.
Expect to have some swelling for a few weeks, but you’ll see 90% of your desired results within 1-3 months of your procedure. How soon you reach your goal depends on the extent of your procedure, the area treated, and your general health and ability to recover.
