How Lasers Can Get Rid of Your Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Wrinkles and lines develop naturally as you age and your skin loses elasticity. Exposure to the elements, especially the sun, as well as genetics and lifestyle can accelerate the development of wrinkles and fine lines.
If you’re bothered by the signs of aging, anti-aging laser treatments offered at Plastic Surgery Arts Center in Webster, Texas, under the direction of Dr. Jan Garcia, can help. These noninvasive sessions can smooth moderate lines and wrinkles without the downtime, expense, and invasiveness of major surgery.
Learn how laser treatment can help you get a younger, more vibrant complexion.
How laser therapy works
Lasers direct high-energy beams of light to stimulate your cells to turn over and remodel. Older, dull, and damaged skin cells slough away. The energy also prompts increased production of collagen, a major skin protein responsible for resilience and strength.
By removing older cells and encouraging the proliferation of new cells and collagen, laser treatment minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and uneven pigmentation.
What happens during laser treatment for lines and wrinkles
Laser treatments happen in our office at Plastic Surgery Arts Center. Your technician applies a local anesthetic to the treatment area. They use a small handheld device to deliver targeted energy that passes over your skin. The energy penetrates the outer layers of your skin to make changes in the structural cells that lie below.
Treatment takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the size of the treatment area. Most people need multiple treatments to get the best results.
What areas can be treated
At your pre-treatment consultation with the team, let us know the specific areas that bother you most when it comes to lines and wrinkles. We can treat just one area, like the lines around your eyes or those around your mouth. We can also treat the entire face.
People with acne or very dark skin may not be good candidates for laser treatment. We will also recommend that you quit smoking at least two weeks prior to your laser session because smoking interferes with healing.
Recovery after laser treatment
Following your session, we apply a bandage over the treated area and you go home to recover. It’s normal to have some redness, swelling, and itching. You’ll notice the top layers of your skin begin to peel and the side effects ease around day 5-7.
During healing, you should keep your skin clean and moisturized. We recommend multiple cleanings per day and application of an ointment, like petroleum jelly, to prevent scabbing.
Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
This is especially important after laser treatment because your skin is extra vulnerable to UV rays. A wide-brimmed hat offers even more protection.
Your skin should be fully healed after one month. Full results are noticeable after three months.
